In the next, the circle of the fraudulent, Dante and Virgil encounter popes guilty of simony (or the selling of church services). There, men with moneybags hanging round their necks flick off flames, just as dogs shoo away insects in summer. The writer Dante’s friend and compatriot, Giotto was commissioned to paint the inside of the chapel by the son of an infamous usurer that Dante identifies in the seventh circle of hell. These inspired the frescoes depicting the final judgement day that the painter Giotto painted around the walls and ceiling of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. In the remaining seven circles of hell, Dante and Virgil observe punishments that are so grisly that sinners are reduced to grotesque conditions. They are joined for eternity, inverting the biblical prescription in Matthew that “what God has joined together, let man not separate.” Murdered by Francesca’s husband and Paolo’s brother, Giovanni Malatesta, these two souls drift aimlessly, their bodies fused together as punishment for adultery. There, he encounters the souls of the lustful, including the legendary Tristan and Isolde and the historical Francesca da Rimini and her lover Paolo. In the second circle, Dante is distraught by the cruelty of the punishment he observes. Francesca and Paolo, adulterers, Gustave Dore, circa 1860. Each faction thinks one virtue is best: Dauntless think bravery is keen, Erudite love knowledge, Abnegation is pro-self-sacrifice, Amity hearts friendship, and Candor is into telling it like it is. One might think it should remain a carefully guarded secret shared with a select few. To many people, the idea of sharing the secret of success seemed detrimental. The product of their vision and efforts was the book Think and Grow Rich, which has since sold over 15 million copies worldwide, inspired and guided millions of readers and leaders, and helped to shape the world in which we live. Hill would spend the next 25 years of his life interviewing over 500 millionaires (and performing 25,000 case studies on those who had failed) in order to unlock the secret formula to success and reveal it to the world. Nearly a century ago, world-renowned steel magnate Andrew Carnegie asked this same question and commissioned young journalist Napoleon Hill to answer it. I was expecting Shane’s illegal striking out to be big, massive, moving the plot forward, but without giving the punchline away, this really isn’t what the storyline is about, and the ‘striking out’ was more like a teenager having an online tantrum with some financial implications. Shane was all these elements but it was like the author missed some of the plot. Quick wit and hacking skills, is quick to stand up for justice and avenge wrongs. Irascible, dirty mouthed and tempestuous. It had all the elements that should have had me eating out of it’s hand. He must face the demons of his soul or a future without love. At the threat of losing for good yet another man who’s broken through his armour, Matthew finds his heart stripped bare. Then Shane strikes at the wrong target, and Matthew realises just how far gone he already is. Especially when Shane, with his quick wit and hacking skills, is quick to stand up for justice and avenge wrongs. Shane is sexy, warm and funny, and Matthew finds himself trying like hell not to care about him. He’s steered clear of serious relationships, but when he meets the irascible, dirty mouthed and tempestuous Shane Templar that decision has never been harder. Though two years past, Matthew Langer is still getting over the death of a loved one. |
